NHL: Pittsburgh 4, Washington 3 (OT)

PITTSBURGH, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Sergei Gonchar scored 1:33 into overtime against his former team Thursday, giving the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 victory over Washington.

Pittsburgh's Darryl Sydor forced overtime with his first goal of the year, a power-play tally with 2:16 left in regulation. Gonchar then took a backhanded pass from Sidney Crosby in the right circle and one-timed a shot past the glove of Olaf Kolzig.

Gonchar spent 10 seasons with Washington before coming to Pittsburgh three years ago.

The Penguins defeated Washington for the 10th time in 11 meetings.

Washington trailed by a goal heading into the second period, but Brian Pothier tied it 5:23 into the frame and Alexander Ovechkin put the Capitals in front with 1:34 remaining.
