WASHINGTON, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Mike Green scored his sixth and seventh goals of the season Saturday and the Washington Capitals topped the Atlanta Thrashers 6-3.
Washington grabbed a quick 2-0 lead when Nicklas Backstrom and Jeff Schultz scored a minute apart midway through the first period. That lead grew to 5-1 after the second and Washington quelled Atlanta's comeback effort in the third.
Matt Pettinger and Alexander Ovechkin scored once each, Backstrom added two assists, while goaltender Olaf Kolzig stopped 23 of 26 shots for the Capitals -- who had lost four of their previous five games before their best offensive effort this season.
On the power play, Atlanta went 1 for 4 and Washington was scoreless in its four man-advantage opportunities.
