CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Chris Lofton scored 16 points and four Tennessee teammates hit double figures Tuesday, allowing the 12th-ranked Volunteers to hold off Chattanooga 76-70.
Stephen McDowell scored 14 points to lead the Mocs (4-4), whose two-game win streak ended. Marcus Watts added 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Nicchaeus Doaks contributed 10 points.
Tennessee led only 34-33 at halftime and was unable to put the Mocs away in the second half until a 21-8 run midway through the session produced a 61-49 lead.
A Ramar Smith's lay-in with 1:18 to play put the Vols up 70-57, but Chattanooga scored the next six to pull within seven. Lofton secured the win for Tennessee by hitting four free throws in succession down the stretch.
