NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Rick DiPietro won a goaltending battle with Martin Brodeur Friday night, as the New York Islanders nipped New Jersey, 1-0.

The lone goal came from Josef Vasicek, who scored shorthanded 5:25 into the second period.

This was the Islanders' fifth win in their last seven games, although they had dropped their previous two.

DiPietro made 26 saves to pick up his 13th career shutout.

These teams have met three times this season and the Islanders have won them all.

It was the third unsuccessful opportunity for Brodeur to record the 500th victory of his career.

Brodeur's first chance to earn his 500th win came last Saturday, but the Devils dropped a 2-1 decision to the Islanders. He lost again Wednesday night to the New York Rangers.

The only NHL goaltender to reach 500 wins is Patrick Roy, who had 551 regular-season triumphs and 151 in the playoffs.
