Dallas Stars fire general manager

FRISCO, Texas, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Dallas Stars General Manager Doug Armstrong was relieved of his duties Tuesday, the NHL team said.

Dallas is 7-7-3 this season and hasn't advanced past the first round of the playoffs under Armstrong, who was under contract through the 2010-11 season.

"As an owner I have to be responsible for one person in hockey operations and that is the general manager of the team," said Stars owner Tom Hicks. "I thought that the team needed a change in direction. I know that change can be healthy and it was my determination that this move needed to be made. I want the Dallas Stars to return to being one of the elite teams in the league."

Armstrong has been associated with the Stars for some 17 years. He was an assistant general manager for nine seasons before taking over the head position on Jan. 25, 2002.

Hicks said the team would announce interim positions to run the team in the near future.
