NHL: New Jersey 3, Toronto 2

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Nov. 2 (UPI) -- John Madden scored a short-handed goal in the third period Friday night, as the New Jersey Devils beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2.

Madden's sixth tally of the season broke a 1-1 tie at 15:48 of the third period and put New Jersey ahead to stay. New Jersey's David Clarkson and Zach Parise also scored goals.

Goaltender Martin Brodeur stopped 26-of-28 Toronto shots, including five late in the game, as the Devils got their second straight victory for the second time this season.

Toronto’s Alexander Steen and Mats Sundin both scored, with Sundin scoring on the power play with less than 40 seconds remaining.

Goalie Vesa Toskala was beaten three times on 20 shots for the Maple Leafs, who suffered their second straight loss.

In man-advantage situations, Toronto went 1-for-5 and New Jersey was 0-for-4.
