NEW YORK, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- San Francisco placekicker Joe Nedney has been fined $7,500 for making an obscene gesture toward a fan in last Sunday’s 31-10 loss to New Orleans.
The gesture was made after Nedney booted a kickoff out of bounds after his 29-yard third quarter field goal produced the 49ers' initial points.
The errant kickoff led to the Saints beginning their next possession at the 40-yard line.
"That was really out of character for me," Nedney told the Contra Costa Times. "It was a culmination of a very frustrating day for me. I know I showed bad judgment. I wish I could take that finger and stick it right back down onto my palm, but I can't. All I can do is apologize."
Nedney is one of the league's most consistent placekickers, having made 8-of-9 field goal attempts and all eight of his extra point tries this season.
