Cardinals make Mozeliak general manager

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- John Mozeliak Wednesday was named the 11th permanent general manager for baseball's St. Louis Cardinals.

Mozeliak was named interim GM when Walt Jocketty was fired Oct. 3 after 13 years, and also will be the Cardinals' vice president.

"I could not be more proud to continue my association with the St. Louis Cardinals as our general manager," Mozeliak said in a release. "I am grateful for the opportunity and I assure Cardinals fans everywhere that we will have success. I am honored, committed and ready to start today toward building the best operation in baseball."

Mozeliak joined the Cardinals after the 1995 season, and served as the assistant GM for five years.

"Mo' has proven to us -- and to everyone in baseball -- that he is one of the game's rising young stars in any major league baseball front office," said Bill DeWitt Jr., the team's chairman of the board and general partner.
