QUEBEC CITY, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- American Lindsay Davenport continued her comeback Tuesday by beating seventh-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the first round of the Bell Challenge.
Davenport, a three-time Grand Slam winner, won 6-3, 6-3 over Kerber, improving to 9-1 since returning to the WTA Tour in September. She also was playing less than five months after giving birth to her first child.
Eighth-seeded Russian Olga Poutchkova, a finalist last year, won her first- round match, beating New Zealander Marina Erakovic 6-1, 6-2.
In other action, American Vania King beat Anne Kremer of Luxembourg 6-2, 6-1; France's Stephanie Foretz beat Russian Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-4; Frenchwoman Severine Bremond beat Canadian Marie-Eve Pelletier 6-2, 6-3; Jill Craybas defeated fellow American Lilia Osterloh 6-4, 2-6, 6-2; and Russia's Alina Jidkova advanced with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over American Sunitha Rao.
In the final match Tuesday, Canadian Stephanie Dubois beat American qualifier Abigail Spears 6-1, 6-4.
