Report: Smith suspended after bar incident

DENVER, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith is due in court next Monday to face charges of assault, destruction of property and disturbing the peace.

The Rocky Mountain News reported Thursday a summons said the charges stemmed from an incident Oct. 13 at a local club in which the 22-year-old Smith allegedly doused a woman with champagne, "apologized to the victim," spit on her, used his hand to push her face and tore her dress," a police officer responding to the scene wrote in a report.

The officer added "he was very (drunk and) doesn't remember everything" that happened at the club and the unidentified woman had "no apparent injuries."

The Nuggets suspended Smith for the first three games of the regular season, which opens next Wednesday, for conduct detrimental to the team.

"I take full responsibility for my actions that led to this suspension,” Smith said on the Nuggets' Web site. “I realize that the organization wants to help me become not only a better player but also the best person I can off the court. I apologize to my teammates, the coaching staff, my family and Nuggets fans. I promise to learn from this situation and look forward to returning shortly and being the best teammate I possibly can.”
