Davydenko moves on at St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Nikolay Davydenko led Wednesday's winners at the $1 million St. Petersburg Open at St. Petersburg, Russia.

In a first-round match, the top-seeded Davydenko drubbed unseeded Filippo Volandri of Italy, 6-1, 6-1, as he started his quest for a second title in three weeks.

He topped France's Paul-Henri Mathieu Oct. 14 to capture the Kremlin Cup.

Also Wednesday, unseeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia, No. 7 seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany, and unseeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia advanced to the quarterfinals, while sixth-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco moved into the second round.

The tournament's eventual champion Sunday will claim a winner's check of $142,000.
