COL FB: Vanderbilt 17, South Carolina 6

COLUMBIA, S.C., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Mackenzie Adams tossed two first-quarter touchdown passes Saturday as Vanderbilt stunned No. 8 South Carolina 17-6.

The victory marked the first time the Commodores beat a Steve Spurrier-coached opponent.

Adams' scoring throws went to George Smith for 22 yards at the 6:43 mark and Justin Wheeler for 20 yards with 17 seconds left in the first.

Overall, he completed 8 of 16 passes for 123 yards with one interception, and added 86 yards on 13 rushing attempts.

Smith caught three passes for 52 yards, and the touchdown catch was Wheeler’s only reception.

The Commodores (4-3, 2-3 SEC) blew a 10-point halftime lead against Georgia last Saturday.

South Carolina's Ryan Succop booted 32- and 34-yard second-quarter field goals.

Chris Smelley went 14-for-24 for 154 yards, but had two passes intercepted. Kenny McKinley made four receptions for 78 yards as the Gamecocks (6-2, 3-2 SEC) lost to Vandy for the first time since 1999.
