NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Veteran New York Knicks guard Allan Houston Saturday ended his short comeback attempt, announcing he will not play this season.
The 6-foot-6 inch Houston spent two years in a retirement forced by knee injury problems, and said earlier this month he would attempt to play again, but appeared in just two pre-season games against Boston and New Jersey.
Observers said he found the speed of the game made him look like a has-been.
"While my body and my knees feel fine, I know what's required for me to be truly effective in the NBA again, and it involves a timing and progression that would not be fair to (Coach Isiah Thomas) and the Knicks right now," Houston said on the team's Web site.
Houston, 36, played nine of his 12 NBA seasons with the Knicks before announcing his retirement Jan. 19, 2005, when chronic knee problems limited his playing time.
He is the Knicks' fourth-leading all-time scorer with 11,165 points.
