NFL must back plan for games in Toronto

NEW YORK, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- The Buffalo Bills’ plan to play a game in Toronto next season has caught fire with some NFL officials.

The Bills would require league approval to play a regular season game north of the border as they push to become global. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told the Buffalo News it is a multi-year plan that would start next season.

The Bills need approval from county and state officials to play home games outside their normal field, Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.

"The team hopes to capitalize on the increasing interest of fans in the Canadian market by playing a regular season game in Toronto," the team said in a release.

Three-quarters of the league's 32 owners must go along. McCarthy added there's a chance the owners will only hear the proposal next Tuesday and delay formal action to another meeting.

Approval by county and state officials is required under the lease at Wilson Stadium if the team wants to play a home game at another venue.
