WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Bill Guerin scored three times Thursday night to help the New York Islanders beat Washington, 5-2.
It was Guerin's first hat trick in the new season, with two of his goals coming on the power play. He has a team-high six assists after signing a two-year, $9 million deal during the off-season.

New York's Sean Bergenheim and Bryan Berard (power play) scored once each, and goalie Rick DiPietro saved 27-of-29 shots, as the Islanders halted a two-game skid.
The Capitals got goals from Alexander Ovechkin and Tomas Fleischmann, both in the third.
Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig gave up five goals on 21 shots.
It was the fourth straight game the Capitals allowed a goal in a three-on-five power-play situation.
