Mauresmo out at Zurich Open

ZURICH, Switzerland, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- France's Amelie Mauresmo was one of Wednesday's upset victims at the Zurich Open Tennis Tournament at Zurich, Switzerland.

The former world No. 1, the tournament's eighth seed, lost, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, to unseeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine in a second-round match.


Also losing were third-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic, No. 5 seed Ana Ivanovic, and injured Russian Elena Dementieva.

Jankovic was a 6-4, 6-4 loser to Nicole Vadisova of the Czech Republic, while Dementieva retired with a left thigh injury in he first-round battle against Italian Francesca Schiavone.

With her second-round exit, Dementieva, who won last week's Kremlin Cup at Moscow, will fail to qualify for this year's season-ending Tour Championships at Madrid, Spain.

"Obviously I'm very disappointed about the result of the match and disappointed also that I couldn't have made it to Madrid," Dementieva said.

Another winner was ninth-seeded Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli of France.
