Federer reaches third round inMadrid

MADRID, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Roger Federer, playing for the first time since winning a fourth straight U.S. Open title, was a second-round winner Tuesday at the Madrid Masters.

Top-seeded and ranked No. 1 in the world, Federer defeated American Robby Ginepri 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in 1 hour, 25 minutes. He had 12 aces and held his serve throughout the match.

Federer has now won his last 39 matches against American players. The 12-time major champion is the defending champion in Madrid, having beaten Chilean Fernando Gonzalez in last year's finale.

The U.S. Open, Wimbledon and Australian Open champion and French Open runner-up, Federer has a 15-match overall winning streak.

Federer will meet either 13th-seeded Guillermo Canas or qualifier Agustin Calleri in the third round.

In other second-round play, Argentine Juan Monaco beat 11th-seeded German Tommy Haas 6-4, 7-5 and Englishman Andy Murray beat 15th-seeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 6-3.

Also, Croat Ivo Karlovic defeated Russian Marat Safin 6-3, 6-4. Safin won this Madrid event in 2004.
