Murray, Baghdatis, Ginepri win in Madrid

MADRID, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Britain's Andy Murray, Cyprus' Marcos Baghdatis and American Robby Ginepri were among Monday's first-round winners at the Madrid Masters tennis tournament.

Murray defeated Czech Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-1, Baghdatis beat Romanian Andrei Pavel 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, and Ginepri outlasted Austrian Jurgen Melzer 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

Ginepri next plays top-seeded and defending Madrid champion Roger Federer, who has been idle since capturing a fourth straight U.S. Open title last month. Baghdatis will play three-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal.

In an all-Spanish match Monday, Fernando Verdasco beat Albert Montanes 6-1, 6-1.

Also, Spaniard Feliciano beat Italian Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-2; Austrian Stefan Koubek beat Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 3-6, 6-4; Argentine Juan Monaco beat Russian Igor Andreev 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-4; Croat Mario Ancic beat Frenchman Marc Gicquel 6-4, 6-2; and Argentine Juan Martin del Potro beat Italian Potito Starace 7-5, 6-1.
