NHL: Philadelphia 3, N.Y. Islanders 1

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Sami Kapanen scored the eventual game-winning goal Saturday night as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Islanders, 3-1.

Kapanen's first goal of the new season gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead at 8:46 of the second period.

New York came within 2-1 on a short-handed tally by Josef Vasicek at 2:38 of the third, but Jason Smith scored unassisted into an empty net at the 19:54 mark to ensure Philadelphia's victory.

Goalie Martin Biron stopped 29 of 30 New York shots as the Flyers won for the second time in their last three games.

New York goaltender Rick DiPietro made 20 saves on 22 shots.

The Islanders have split four games.

On the power play, Philadelphia was 1-for-4, and New York was 0-for-1.
