BERKELEY, Calif., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Yvenson Bernard rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns Saturday as the Oregon State Beavers upset second-ranked California, 31-28.
Bernard scored the winning touchdown on a fourth-down play with 8 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Time expired before California could line up for a last-ditch field goal attempt near the Oregon State 10-yard line.
The Golden Bears (5-1, 2-1 Pac-10) probably would have been No. 1 with a victory, since top-ranked LSU lost to Kentucky, 43-37, in three overtimes, earlier Saturday.
Sean Canfield went 18-for-33 for 186 yards for the Beavers (4-3, 2-2).
Red-shirt freshman Kevin Riley -- starting in place of Nate Longshore, who sprained his right ankle in Cal's last game against Oregon Sept. 29 -- finished 20-of-34 for 294 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Justin Forsett had 28 carries for 150 yards.
