Cabrera’s 4 and 3 victory over defending HSBC match play champion Paul Casey Friday was the closest result of the four quarterfinal matches scheduled for 36 holes. Cabrera, who won the U.S. Open this year, is paired against Mahan, who beat Soren Hansen 6 and 4, even through Hansen won one hole with a hole-in-one.
On Friday Cabrera used birdies on match holes Nos. 16-19 to take control over Casey while Mahan never trailed after taking the lead on the third hold of the match and put Hansen away with a birdie on the 32nd hole.
Els, who led for all but one hole Friday, advanced with a 6 and 5 win over Andrews Romero and Stenson, who took control with three birdies over a four-hole span, ran up a 7 and 6 triumph over Anders Hansen.
The tournament semifinals are set for Saturday.
