NHL: Washington 2, NY Islanders 1

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Olaf Kolzig stopped 30 shots Monday while leading the Washington Capitals to a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders.

Viktor Kozlov and Brooks Laich each scored for the Capitals, who were outshot 31-12. Washington has now won three straight to start a season for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

Richard Park had the only goal for the Islanders, who failed to go 3-0 for the first time since 2001-02, when they started the season with four straight wins.

Rick DiPietro allowed two goals on only 12 Washington shots.

Park scored first goal of the season with 13:30 left in the first period. Kozlov tied the score with 12 minutes left in the second period. Laich scored the game's final goal with 12:02 left to play.
