METZ, France, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo needed three sets Monday to defeat German Florian Mayer at the $500,000 Open de Moselle.
Robredo lost the first set and was forced to win a second-set tiebreak on his way to a 4-6, 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 victory over Mayer on Day 1 of the tournament. The match lasted 2 hours, 9 minutes.

Seventh-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber advanced by beating Argentine Agustin Calleri 6-3, 6-1 in 58 minutes, while Marc Gicquel defeated fellow Frenchman Florent Serra 6-4, 7-6 (7-0).
U.S. Open runner-up Novak Djokovic, who is not defending his title this week, beat Austrian Jurgen Melzer in last year's Metz finale.
