MLS: Los Angeles 2, Columbus 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Kyle Martino’s goal in the 16th minute Sunday gave the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 Major League Soccer victory over the Crew at Columbus.

The resurgent Galaxy (7-13-6) won their third straight game since losing star player David Beckham to a left-ankle and knee injury. The win helped Los Angeles maintain slim playoff hopes.

The Crew (7-10-10) suffered the eighth loss in their last nine games. Their lone goal was scored by Alejandro Moreno in the second minute.

The loss left the Crew two points behind eighth-place Chicago in the Eastern Conference for the final spot in the MLS Cup Playoff chase, as Columbus failed to take advantage of losses by both Chicago and Colorado this weekend.
