MLB: Minnesota 3, Boston 2

BOSTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Rondell White drove in the decisive run in the first inning Sunday, as the Minnesota Twins beat Boston, 3-2.

Torii Hunter and Garrett Jones also drove in runs for the Twins, who finished the 2008 season with their first losing record since 2000.

Winning pitcher Matt Garza (5-7) allowed four hits and one run with five strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

Starter and loser Julian Tavarez (7-11) yielded three runs on three hits over three innings for Boston.

Jason Varitek homered and Manny Ramirez drove in the other Boston run.

The Red Sox finished the regular season with the best record in baseball, and will have the home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

They open their AL division series with the Los Angeles Angels Wednesday at Fenway Park.
