MLB: Boston 5, Minnesota 2

BOSTON, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- David Ortiz had a single, double and home run Friday night as the Boston Red Sox won the American League East title with a 5-2 decision over Minnesota.

Shortly after the Red Sox finished off their victory, the New York Yankees fell to Baltimore in extra innings -- leaving Boston with its first division crown since 1995.

The Yankees will enter the playoffs as the league's wild-card team.

The Red Sox won Friday for the third time in four games, with Mike Lowell driving in two runs and scoring twice.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (15-12) got the win, giving up two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in eight innings.

Jonathan Papelbon worked the ninth for his 37th save.

The loss went to Kevin Slowey (4-1), who surrendered four runs over 5 2/3 innings.

Ortiz doubled in the first and scored on a Lowell single. Ortiz singled in the sixth, when Boston scored a run, and he hit a solo homer in the eighth.
