BALTIMORE, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Melvin Mora's 10th-inning bunt single Friday night gave the Baltimore Orioles a 10-9 win over New York and ended the Yankees' division title hopes.
The Yankees blew a three-run lead in the ninth and then were caught by surprise when Mora laid down a perfect bunt in an unlikely situation -- with the bases loaded and two out.
New York's loss handed the Boston Red Sox the American League East title. The Yankees will go into the playoffs as the wild-card team.
New York had won the AL East nine straight years.
Baltimore overcame a 9-6 deficit in the ninth, loading the bases against Mariano Rivera before Jay Payton produced a three-run double to the right-centerfield gap.
The Orioles again loaded the bases with two away in the 10th against Edwar Ramirez (1-1) and Mora then pulled off the shocking bunt to win it.
Chad Bradford (4-7) picked up the victory by pitching the top of the 10th.
