Georgetown's Thompson extends contract

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Georgetown basketball Coach John Thompson III was given a contract extension Thursday that makes his agreement with the school good through 2013.

Thompson, the son of longtime Hoyas Coach John Thompson, has guided Georgetown to a 72-30 record over three seasons. Last season, the Hoyas won the Big East regular season title, the Big East Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Final Four.

"I'm extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to do something that I love and to do it at a place I love to do it," Thompson said. "I truly appreciate the confidence (Georgetown) President (Jack) DeGioia has shown in me and the support we've received from the fans and the university community.

"This institution provides a great environment for the development of young people as students, as athletes and as complete individuals. I'm glad to be a small part of that and will continue to work as hard as I possibly can while representing Georgetown."

Financial terms of the six-year contract extension, which runs through the 2012-13 season, weren't released.
