V.Williams wins in Korea Open first round

SEOUL, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Venus Williams claimed an easy first-round victory Tuesday in the first-round action of the $145,000 Korea Open hard-court tennis tournament.

Williams fired eight aces in sweeping past Abigail Spears, 6-2, 6-3, in 70 minutes and moved into the second round where she is to face Tamarine Tanasugarn.

Agnes Szavay, seeded second this week after collecting the tournament title in Beijing Sunday, also advanced to the Korea Open second round, knocking out local wild-card entrant Ye-Ra Lee, 6-2, 6-3. She next goes against Galina Voskoboeva.

Fifth-seeded Eleni Daniilidou opened her Korea Open title defense with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Carolina Wozniacki and No 6-seed Martina Muller stopped Sung-hee Han, 6-1, 6-0.

Also recording victories Tuesday were Tanasugarn, Mathilde Johansson, Catalina Castano, Meng Yuan and Ahsha Rolle.

The 2007 Korea Open champion will take home $21,140.
