Peng takes first-round win at Guangzhou

GUANGZHOU, China, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Local favorite Shuai Peng took a solid first-round victory Tuesday at the $175,000 Guangzhou International hard-court tennis tournament in China.

Peng, from Tain Jin, China, ranked 47th in the world and seeded third at Guangzhou, defeated Emilia Salerni, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), and advanced to the second round.

Top-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues also posted a straight-set win, taking out Shengnan Sun, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, and second-seeded Virginie Razzano also won Tuesday but needed a third set in a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 triumph over Jill Craybas.

Kostanic Tosic beat Shuai Zhang, 6-2, 6-4, on Tuesday but eight matches were postponed because of rain. A total of 12 first-round matches are yet to be completed.

The tournament is scheduled to wrap up Sunday in a championship match with $25,855 to the winner.
