BANGKOK, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Fifth-seeded Carlos Moya was upset in straight sets Tuesday during the first round of the $550,000 Thailand Open tennis tournament.
The event also lost its top seed when world No. 3 Novak Djokovic withdrew because of a back injury. Djokovic will be fined $40,000 for the late withdrawal. George Bastl was inserted in Djokovic's spot in the bracket.
Benjamin Becker made Moya's stay in Bangkok a short one with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory over the world No. 15.
No. 7-seed Ivo Karlovic used a 23-ace barrage in his 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory over Feliciano Lopez in the only other match involving a seeded player.
Also in first-round play Tuesday, Frank Dancevic got by Juan Martin del Potro, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3); Nicolas Mahut beat Zack Fleishman, 7-5, 6-2, and Michael Llodra was a 7-6 (7-2) winner over Teimuraz Gabashvili.
Other winners Tuesday were Dominik Meffert, Mischa Zverev and Thailand's Danai Udomchoke, a wild-card entry.
The tournament continues through the week with the champion picking up a check for $76,500. Last year's winner, James Blake, is not in the 2007 Thailand Open field.
