United States advances to Davis Cup final

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick Sunday ripped Jonas Bjorkman, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 to give the United States an insurmountable 3-1 lead in a best-of-five semifinal tie with Sweden.

Later, James Blake completed the 4-1 triumph with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Simon Aspelin in the dead rubber match.

“It’s moments like these you put in time practicing for,” Roddick said.

“I'm so proud to be part of this team … I wouldn't trade this team for any in the world.”

Later this year, the United States will play in the Davis Cup final for the first time since a loss to Spain three years ago against defending champion Russia.

The site for the final has not been determined, but the U.S. will be the host nation.

Despite its 31 Davis Cup titles, the U.S. is in its longest-ever championship drought, having not hoisted the chalice since beating Russia in 1995.
