USA vs. England in World Cup quarters

TIANJIN, China, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- The United States, needing to step up its offense, will meet England Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup in Tianjin, China.

Although the Americans are ranked No. 1 in the world, they managed only five goals in their three group games against North Korea, Sweden and Nigeria.

England, meanwhile, battled defending champion Germany to a scoreless draw in their group.

"I'm just excited to get out there and continue to show the world that we can play better soccer because we haven't played our best yet," said American forward Abby Wambach.

The United States has reached the semifinals in all four previous World Cups.

Also on the schedule Saturday will be a quarterfinal match between Germany and North Korea in Wuhan, China.

The other quarterfinals will be played Sunday -- Norway taking on China and Australia facing Brazil. The semifinals will be played next Wednesday and Thursday, with the title game scheduled for Sept. 30.

If the United States defeats England, the Americans would play the Brazil-Australia winner in the semis.
