CARY, N.C., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Mark Wiebe, in his first round ever on the Champions Tour, fired a 7-under 65 Friday to share the lead after 18 holes of the SAS Championship at Car, N.C.
Wiebe, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, birdied his first two holes and wound up tied for the top spot with Boonchu Ruangkit.
Ruangkit won this year's Champions Tour qualifying tournament.
Dana Quigley was alone in third at 66 while Denis Watson, Dick Mast, David Edwards and Tom Purtzer were all at 67.
Wiebe shot his lowest competitive score in six years and became the first player on the tour since Edwards last season to lead after his debut round.
Jeff Sluman, playing only his second event on the circuit, was tied for eighth at 68 with leading money Jay Haas.
