MLB: Cincinnati 4, San Francisco 2

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Jeff Keppinger put Cincinnati in front with a two-run single in the fifth Thursday night and the Reds held on to defeat San Francisco, 4-2.

The Giants have lost seven of their last eight.

Keppinger gave the Reds a 2-1 lead and Jason Ellison added a run for Cincinnati with a homer in the seventh, his first of the year. After the Giants closed within 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Buck Coates singled in the final run of the game in the eighth.

Rookie Homer Bailey (3-2), making his first major league appearance since July 7, got the victory, lasting 5 2/3 innings. Bailey, who has bounced back and forth to the minors and suffered a groin injury as well this year, gave up a run on three hits.

David Weathers worked a perfect ninth for his 32nd save.

The loss went to Matt Cain (7-16), who allowed two runs in seven innings.
