Srebotnik makes Slovenia Open quarters

PORTOROZ, Slovenia, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Fourth-seeded and local favorite Katarina Srebotnik dropped just two games Thursday in charging into the quarterfinals of the $145,000 Slovenia Open.

Srebotnik breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 second-round victory over Meghann Shaughnessy and earned a Round of Eight berth against eighth-seeded Emilie Loit. Loit dispatched Nathalie Vierin 6-3, 6-4 Thursday to make the quarters of the hard-court tennis tournament.

No. 9-seeded Meilen Tu posted a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 win over Ana Vrljic and earned a shot at top-seeded Tatiana Golovin in Friday's quarters. Also Thursday, seventh-seeded Gisela Dulko handled Elena Vesnina 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 and next goes against second-seeded Sybille Bammer in the quarterfinals.

The fourth quarterfinal match Friday pits fifth-seeded Vera Zvonareva against No. 8-seeded Vera Dushevina.

The tournament continues through Sunday when the champion will earn $21,140.
