NEW YORK, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- The Cincinnati Reds Thursday learned their protest during Monday’s 7-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs was denied by Major League Baseball.
The Reds protested the game, saying Cubs Manager Lou Piniella made an illegal double switch in the sixth inning because he did not go directly to the home plate umpire.
Piniella came out to take out pitcher Michael Wuertz after a hit by Jeff Keppinger, but before that, he brought in catcher Geovany Soto and reliever Scott Eyre.
Cincinnati interim manager Pete Mackanin indicated he was playing the game under protest because Piniella crossed the foul line before indicating the double switch.
"I'm sure if that's what it says in their interpretation, he's right," Mackanin told The Cincinnati Post this week about plate umpire Rick Reed's explanation. "It didn't really affect the game."
MLB President and Chief Operating Officer Bob DuPuy made Thursday's ruling.
