Top seeds advance in Slovenia Open

PORTOROZ, Slovenia, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Top seeds Tatiana Golovin and Sybille Bammer each notched straight-set victories Wednesday during the second round of the $145,000 Slovenia Open.

Golovin, the No. 1 seed in the hard-court tournament, moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Karin Knapp while Bammer, seeded second, ousted Elena Likhovtseva, 6-3, 6-2.

No. 5-seed Vera Zvonareva topped Nathalie Dechy 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 and eighth-seeded Vera Dushevina beat Iveta Benesova, 6-4, 6-4, and will meet in Friday's quarterfinals.

Three first-round matches, delayed Tuesday by rain and darkness, were completed Wednesday. No. 7-seeded Gisela Dulko beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi, 6-3, 6-4; ninth-seeded Meilen Tu advanced over Jelena Kostanic Tosic, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3); and Elena Vesnina was a 6-3, 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 winner over Polona Hercog.

The champion of the Slovenia Open, to be determined Sunday, will earn $21,140.
