MLB: San Diego 5, Pittsburgh 3

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Greg Maddux gave up three runs in five innings but San Diego's bullpen came through and the Padres bumped of the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 Tuesday.

Cla Meredith, Doug Brocail and Trevor Hoffman combined for four shutout innings to preserve the win for the Padres, who won their fifth straight to stay one back of Arizona in the NL West and 1 1/2 games ahead of Philadelphia for a wild card playoff spot.

Khalil Greene went 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Adrian Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to spark San Diego's offense.

Maddux (13-10) gave up seven hits and two walks. He struck out only two but it was good enough to reach the 13-win mark for the 20th straight year -- breaking Cy Young's record. Maddux's streak of 59-plus innings without walking a batter ended in the third inning when he sent Jason Bay to first on a full count.

Xavier Nady was 3-for-4 with a solo homer for Pittsburgh, which has lost four straight and five of its last seven.
