The hometown Patriots showed no sign of being distracted by a scandal over stolen signals that cost the team a high draft choice and a $250,000 fine. Coach Bill Belichick was also fined $500,000.
The Patriots did just fine defensively, shutting out the Chargers in the first half and limiting LaDainian Tomlinson to 43 yards on 18 carries. San Diego compiled 201 yards of total offense to New England’s 407.
Brady completed 25-of-31 passes for 279 yards and was intercepted once.
San Diego’s Philip Rivers completed 30-of-19 passes for 179 yards and was picked off twice. One of those interceptions was returned by Adalius Thomas 65 yards for a touchdown that gave New England a 24-0 lead at halftime lead.
