Bonds' home run ball sells for $752,467

MISSION VIEJO, Calif., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- The baseball slugger Barry Bonds hit for his major leagues record-breaking 756th home run sold for $752,467 this weekend in California.

The San Francisco Chronicle said Sunday the final sales price for the ball at this weekend's auction in Mission Viejo exceeded the expectations of memorabilia experts and likely its owner, contract supervisor Matt Murphy.

Murphy was in the stands Aug. 7 at San Francisco's AT&T Park when the Giants' star hit his record-setting home run against the Washington Nationals.

Also sold during Saturday's auction was the ball Bonds hit to tie MLB great Hank Aaron's home run record.

The ball used in Bonds' 755th career home run was sold for a final bid of $186,750, just under the $200,000 experts predicted the ball would go for.

The Chronicle noted the Sotheby's-SCP Auctions sales fell far short of the $3 million cartoonist Todd McFarland paid for the ball MLB star Mark McGuire hit to temporarily set the single-season home run record.
