PITTSBURGH, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Tony Armas and a pair of relievers combined for a three-hit shutout Monday as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 9-0.
The loss dropped Milwaukee into a first-place tie with the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The Cubs posted a 12-3 win over third-place St. Louis earlier in the day.
Armas (4-5) gave up just three hits and no walks in six innings.
Carlos Villanueva (7-4) shut out Pittsburgh through four innings, but took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in five innings.
Corey Hart was 2-for-3 for the Brewers.
