MLB: Pittsburgh 6, Chi. Cubs 1

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Tom Gorzelanny gave up an earned run and five hits in seven innings Friday night, as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs, 6-1.

Ronny Paulino knocked in the eventual winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, as Pittsburgh built a 6-0 lead. Pittsburgh shortstop Jack Wilson had three hits, one a solo homer in the sixth, and three RBI.

Adam LaRoche had one RBI, while Paulino and Nyjer Morgan had two hits each for the Pirates, who have split their last four games, and remain three losses away from their 15th straight losing season.

Gorzelanny (14-7) walked two batters and fanned three.

Chicago’s lone run scored on Ronny Cedeno's pinch double in the seventh. Geovany Soto and Derek Lee had two hits apiece for the Cubs, who have dropped four of five.

Losing pitcher Rich Hill (8-8) yielded six earned runs and nine hits in six innings.
