"We are very concerned about Fernando's medical condition and we wish him nothing but a full and healthy recovery," Oilers General Manager Kevin Lowe said in a statement to the Edmonton Sun. "Hockey will be secondary until he gets the care and treatment required."

The 30-year-old Pisani scored 14 goals and added 14 assists for 28 points in 77 games last season.

"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me through this difficult time, especially my wife and family," Pisani said. "I appreciate all the wonderful words of encouragement I have received and look forward to returning to the Oilers."

Pisani has 108 points -- 56 goals and 52 assists -- in 268 NHL games.
