SAN DIEGO, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Nate Kaeding kicked three field goals Thursday night and Charlie Whitehurst threw a 40-yard scoring pass as the San Diego Charges downed San Francisco, 16-13.
San Diego finished off its exhibition campaign with a 3-1 record.

Whitehurst completed seven of 14 passes for 76 yards -- 40 of which came on a second-period throw to Craig Davis that gave the Chargers a 13-3 lead at halftime.
Kaeding was good on kicks of 29, 22 and 29 yards.
The 49ers' only touchdown came in the fourth period on a 21-yard pass from Shaun Hill to Zach Hilton.
San Diego will begin its season at home against the defending NFC champion Chicago Bears, while San Francisco (1-3) will open at home against Arizona in a Monday night game.
