U.S. Solheim team finalized

PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Captain Betsy King -- speaking at the LPGA Safeway Classic at Portland, Ore. -- Sunday finalized her team for this year’s Solheim Cup.

Laura Diaz and Nicole Castrale joined Paula Creamer, U.S. Women's Open champion Cristie Kerr, Juli Inkster, Pat Hurst, Natalie Gulbis, Angela Stanford and Sherri Steinhauer on the team. Morgan Pressel, the reigning Nabisco Champion, Stacy Prammanasudh and Brittany Lincicome are the only rookies on the team.

“I'm very happy with the two players I've chosen,” King said. "We have solid Solheim Cup experience and a lot of youth and energy as well."

The European team, finalized last week, includes Annika Sorenstam, Suzann Pettersen, Catriona Matthew, Sophie Gustafson, Laura Davies, Gwladys Nocera, Trish Johnson, Bettina Hauert and Becky Brewerton.

The Solheim Cup is scheduled for Sept. 14-16 at Halmstad Golf Club in Sweden. The United States won the Solheim Cup in 2005, but Europe took the trophy home in 2003, the last time the event was played in Europe.
