NEW YORK, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Orlando Hernandez allowed two earned runs and just four hits in seven innings Saturday afternoon as the New York Mets beat the LA Dodgers, 4-3.
New York had a 3-0 lead on David Wright’s RBI single in the bottom of the third, and a two-run single by Carlos Delgado in the fifth.
Los Angeles closed to 3-2 when Luis Gonzalez and Russell Martin hit back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh, but New York’s Aaron Heilman came on to record his first save this season.
The Mets’ Jeff Conine drove in a run in the seventh and the Dodgers’ Mark Sweeney drove in one in the eighth, to get the LA within 4-3.
“El Duque” (9-4) walked two and fanned seven as the Mets won their second straight.
Losing pitcher Eric Stults (1-2) gave up three earned runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings, with five walks and four strikeouts.
The Mets have a 6 1/2-game NL East lead.
