MLB: San Diego 9, N.Y. Mets 8 (10 inn.)

NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Adrian Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning Thursday night, as the San Diego Padres edged the New York Mets, 9-8.

Gonzalez's 21st homer of the season came after both closers -- San Diego’s Trevor Hoffman and New York’s Billy Wagner -- blew save chances late.

San Diego led, 6-1, when New York scored six times to take a 7-6 lead after six.

Three San Diego players had two RBI. Josh Bard and Khalil Green both had three hits, and two others had two hits for the Padres, who won two games of the three-game series.

Hoffman (3-4) was the winner and Heath Bell earned his first save.

New York’s Marlon Anderson hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Shawn Green drove in two runs, while three players had one RBI each.

Luis Castillo had three hits, and two others had two hits for the Mets, who have dropped two straight.

The loser was Aaron Heilman (7-6).
