Blake wins twice to reach Pilot Pen semis

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- James Blake won two matches Thursday to battle his way into the semifinals of the Pilot Pen at New Haven, Conn.

With rain having played havoc with the tournament earlier in the week, Blake Thursday first defeated Agustin Calleri, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. He fought off three match points in the second set.

In the quarterfinals, Blake got past Fernando Verdasco, 6-4, 6-2.

No. 1 seed and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko was upset in the third round. He fell to Giles Simon, 6-4, 6-4.

Simon then lost in the quarterfinals to Paul-Henri Mathieu, 6-4, 6-3.

The other quarterfinal action saw Ivo Karlovic defeat Igor Andreev, 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), and Mardy Fish oust Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-3, 6-3.
