Twins' Santana is A.L. player of the week

NEW YORK, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana, who struck out 21 batters over 15 innings last week, was selected the American League player of the week.

Santana was 1-0 with a 1.80 earned run average in two starts for the week that ended Sunday. He set a franchise record with 17 strikeouts in limiting the Texas Rangers to two hits over eight innings in a 1-0 Twins' victory.

Monday's announcement marked the third time Santana has been selected the A.L. player of the week.

Also considered for the award were Kansas City's Odalis Perez; Oakland's Lenny DiNardo and Jack Cust; Seattle's Raul Ibanez and Jose Vidro; and the New York Yankees' Bobby Abreu.
